How-to guide

How to use toilet gel discs.

Clean and dry the inside of the bowl under the rim, press the applicator flat against the porcelain for a few seconds, then lift it away and leave the stamp where flushing water runs over it. One stamp typically lasts several days, depending on how often the toilet is flushed.

Step by step.

  1. 1

    Clean the bowl

Brush the bowl and flush. Gel will not stick to limescale, grime or an existing gel ring, so start from a clean surface.

  2. 2

    Dry the application spot

Wipe the area just under the rim with paper towel until it is completely dry. Water is the main reason a disc slides off within a day.

  3. 3

    Position the applicator

Choose a spot on the bowl wall where flushing water flows over it, ideally under the rim on the side, not directly in the water line.

  4. 4

    Press and hold

Press the applicator firmly against the porcelain and hold for around five seconds, then pull it straight back so the gel stamp releases cleanly onto the surface.

  5. 5

    Replace when it disappears

The gel wears down a little with each flush. When only a faint outline is left, wipe the spot dry and stamp a new disc.

Gel discs versus rim blocks.

  • Gel discs leave no plastic cage in the bowl and suit rimless and modern pans where a hanging block will not fit.
  • Discs dissolve completely, so there is nothing to unhook and throw out.
  • Rim blocks last longer per unit and are easier to reposition, but the cage collects grime and needs replacing.
  • Xtra Kleen supplies both: Toilet 12 Gel Disc Stamps Fresh Pine (item 325955) and 2 x 45g rim blocks in Fresh Flowers, Lemon Fresh and Pine Fresh.

Why a disc falls off early.

  • The surface was damp when it was applied.
  • It was stamped over an old gel ring or a limescale patch.
  • It was placed directly in the water line, where it is submerged rather than rinsed.
  • It was pressed for only a second — hold for around five.

Using them alongside other products.

A gel disc keeps the bowl fresh between cleans; it does not replace cleaning. Keep brushing the bowl weekly with a toilet gel or bleach-based cleaner, and re-stamp after a deep clean because the cleaner will strip the existing disc.

Never mix a bleach-based cleaner with acidic descalers in the bowl, and ventilate the room while cleaning.

Questions people also ask.

How long does a toilet gel disc last?

Typically several days in a normal household bathroom. Life depends almost entirely on flush frequency and water pressure, so a busy family toilet or a workplace washroom will get through discs faster than a guest bathroom.

Where should you stamp a toilet gel disc?

On the dry bowl wall just under the rim, on a spot where flushing water washes over it. Avoid the water line itself, where the disc sits submerged and dissolves far too quickly.

Are toilet gel discs safe for the plumbing?

Gel discs are designed to dissolve gradually into the flush water and drain away like other toilet cleaners. If you are on a septic system or have concerns about a specific product, request the Safety Data Sheet from martin@pjsas.com.au before use.

Can you use a gel disc and a rim block together?

You can, but it is usually unnecessary and makes the fragrance overpowering in a small bathroom. Pick one format per toilet, and keep a weekly clean with a toilet gel as the actual cleaning step.
